A massive storm lashed several places in Nepal leading to a trail of death and destruction.

Reports stated that 29 people have been killed and 600 injured so far. Storm hit the Himalayan country’s southern district of Bara and adjoining Parsa.

The National Emergency Operation Centre informed that the injured are currently undergoing treatment at various healthcare facilities.

The District Police Office (DPO) in Parsa informed that the number of casualties could go up. Rescue work has gained momentum in few places but the DPO office did not divulge further details.

Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli mourned the loss of lives while extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Security personnel have been pressed into service for rescue and relief operations.

Prime Minister’s chief advisor Bishnu Rimal informed that Army personnel have already been mobilised to “expedite rescue work”.

“Two battalions has been mobilised immediately. In Mid Air Base, Kathmandu, night vision helicopters are on stand-by with the rescue team. Our security agencies are waiting for favourable weather conditions (sic),” Rimal stated while responding to Province 2 Attorney General Dipendra Jha’s call to deploy Nepal Army personnel for rescue operations.
