Krishna Bahadur Mahara of CPN (Maoist Centre) elected unopposed as Nepal Speaker on March 9, 2018.

CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has been elected the Speaker of the House of Representatives unopposed as he was the only candidate to file nomination for the post, according to news agency reports.

The official announcement of the election will be made on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, Mahara had reached the Federal Parliament building at around 11:20 am to file his candidacy which was proposed by CPN-UML leader Subas Chandra Nembang and seconded by CPN (MC) leader Dev Gurung.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Nepali Congress had decided not to field any candidate for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives Speaker.

According to reports NC spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma informed that the party did not field any candidate for the post in the belief that the House Speaker’s reasonable personality and balanced behaviour would lift the parliament and parliamentary system.

Abstaining from running for the coveted post means to help pick a new Speaker unanimously, he said.
