India will surpass China as the world’s most populous country around 2027, says a latest United Nations (UN) population report.

The 26th edition of the UN population estimates and projection report titled ‘World Population Prospects 2019’ stated that India is expected to add nearly 273 million people between 2019 and 2050.

After this re-ordering between 2019 and 2050, India could remain the world’s most populous country with nearly 1.5 billion inhabitants, followed by China with just under 1.1 billion, the report added.

The other three populous countries after India and China are expected to be Nigeria with 733 million, the United States with 434 million, and Pakistan with 403 million inhabitants.

As per the UN report, the current population of India and China are 1.37 billion and 1.43 billion respectively.

The report added that the global population reached 7.7 billion in the middle of this year .It further stated that the global population is expected to reach 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.9 billion in 2100.

China is one among 55 countries which is expected to witness a decrease in population. Between 2019 and 2050, the population of China is expected to decrease by 31.4 million or 2.2 per cent.

The report stated that among the Southeast Asian counties, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar have experienced a large net outflow of migrants between 2010 and 2020.

Due to issues of insecurity and conflict,the net outflow of migrants from Bangladesh was 4.2 million, from Nepal it was 1.8 million and from Myanmar it was 1.3 million.

The report mentioned that there will be a growth in world population even though the global fertility rate will slow down.
