Bangladesh on Sunday recorded 40 Covid-19 deaths–the highest single-day figure so far — taking the death toll to 650 in the country.
The grim record of deaths comes at a time when the country has reopened all offices, businesses, and transport on a limited scale with an end to the general holidays, extended in phases until May 30 to prevent the spread of coronavirus, Dhaka Tribune reported.
Furthermore, the total number of Covid-19 positive cases has reached 47,153.
During the last 24 hours, a total of 2,545 people tested positive for the virus, the highest single day spike so far.
Of the deceased—33 men and seven women—28 were from Dhaka division, eight from Chittagong division, two from Khulna, and one each from Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, said an official.
Of the 40 who died in the 24-hour span, one was in the 20s, five in their 30s, 11 in their 40s, eight in their 50s, 11 in the 60s, and four were in their 70s.
The death toll accounts for 1.38% of the total number of infected people so far.
Earlier, Bangladesh registered the highest number of Covid-19 deaths (28) in a single day on May 24 and 30.
Deaths from coronavirus infection crossed 600 on May 30.
Dr Nasima, also DGHS acting director general (DG), said 12,229 samples were collected in the past 24 hours and 11,876 of those were tested in 52 labs across the country.
In all, 308,930 tests have been conducted so far, she said.
