Panic gripped a neighbourhood in Dhaka, the capital city of neighbouring Bangladesh as two factions affiliated to the ruling Awami League party clashed on Wednesday night.

Residents of Dhaka’s Segunbagicha locality alleged that on Wednesday night a violent clash erupted among local groups belonging to the Awami League’s volunteer wing Swechchhasebak League and student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League, reports bdnews24.com.

The report even quoted locals as saying that they have heard gun shots during the clash.

However, police later claimed that no gun shots were fired during the clash.

Police sources were quoted as saying that the fighting continued for around half an hour from 10:30 pm near the Segunbagicha kitchen market.

According to sources, the violent clash erupted after the BCL activists stopped the Swechchhasebak League workers from putting up a signboard at a makeshift camp set up for the general election held on Sunday.

Several motorcycles were vandalised and shots were fired during the clash.

However, panicked residents of the area remained indoors.

It is learnt that the BCL workers had come to the localilty to meet Jubayer Ahmed, general secretary of its Dhaka Metropolitan (South) unit, who lives in Segunbagicha.

The BCL activists alleged that the Swechchhasebak League workers came to demolish the camp.

However, Jubayer was of the opinion that he was not in the area during the incident.

Later police claimed that the situation was under control.
