Mohua Moitra Fact check

Guwahati: Social media posts circulating a misleading claim that Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra stated ‘sex’ as her source of energy have been debunked by fact-checkers. Fact-checking website BOOM investigated the viral clip and confirmed that Moitra actually mentioned ‘eggs’ as her energy source, not ‘sex’.

The 12-second excerpt, widely shared with a false narrative, features a reporter asking Moitra about her energy source, to which she responds, “Eggs, Eggs.” Moitra’s clarification that “It’s true” further confirms this.

The misleading caption on the shared clip attempts to falsely portray Moitra’s statement, implying it as a reflection of her suitability as an MP.

However, Moitra herself has confirmed the inaccuracy of these claims. BOOM’s analysis, including a slowed-down examination of the video, reaffirms Moitra’s statement about ‘eggs’. Notably, the original video bears the watermark of ‘News The Truth’, a West Bengal-based news outlet.

Further investigation led BOOM to the full interview uploaded on News The Truth’s YouTube channel on April 13, 2024. In this interview segment from 2:35 to 2:41, Moitra clearly articulates ‘eggs’ as her energy source when prompted by the interviewer.

Mahua Moitra has refuted the false claims surrounding the video, highlighting how certain users manipulated the audio to distort her response. She provided a clearer version of the video, free from background noise and music, which reaffirmed her mention of ‘eggs’.

Additionally, journalist Tamal Saha, who conducted the interview, took to his social media account on April 18, 2024, to address the distortion. Saha clarified that Moitra indeed said ‘eggs’ in response to his question about her morning energy source, emphasizing that the audio has been tampered with malicious intent.

In light of these findings, it’s evident that the viral claim misrepresenting Mahua Moitra’s statement is false, and efforts to clarify the truth have been made by both Moitra herself and the journalist involved in the interview.
