27 non-organic agri-horti items are likely to be banned by the Sikkim Government from March 31. The state was declared as an organic state in 2016.

No specific date has been mentioned in the official notification, which sought a ban on some items to push for consumption of organic food only.

Chief Minister Pawan Chamling had announced March 31 as the date when the ban is likely to come to force in the Assembly last week.

Vegetables such as maize and beans, fruits like banana and guava, spices such as ginger and green chilly are among the list of the 27 banned items.

“If there is any contravention to the notification, the commodities (banned) shall be liable to be seized and disposed of,” the March 10 notification issued by Additional Chief Secretary, Home, SC Gupta, said.

The notification cited health concerns arising out of consumption of non-organic food as the reason behind banning 27 items from outside in the state of Sikkim.
