Guwahati: At least two women died after their scooter was run over by a car and a truck near Garchuk in Guwahati, Assam on Tuesday evening.

According to sources, the deceased were identified as Mamoni Bora Das and Kunti Das.

Sources said that the accident took place near Boragaon in Guwahati’s Garchuk.

The victims were travelling on a scooter in the evening when they were suddenly hit by an SUV (a Mahindra XUV300) bearing registration AS01EB1126 from behind.

The impact pushed the scooter and the two women under a truck bearing registration AS01QC9471.

Some locals retrieved the women but they succumbed to the injuries before any medical help could arrive.

The driver of the SUV identified as Kumud Boro was immediately apprehended by the locals and handed over to the police.

Locals also told media on the spot that the incident was a result of wrong-way driving.

The scooter and the SUV were travelling from the wrong side of the ride while the truck was on the correct site.

The driver of the SUV, Kumud Boro was allegedly drunk and had no control of his vehicle when it crashed into the scooter.

Of the deceased, Mamoni Bora was a resident of Nagaon while Kunti Das was a resident of Sivasagar.

The police have begun an investigation into the incident.
