The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) will be providing free treatment to children who have arrived for screening at the second cerebral palsy camp being organized at its premises on Thursday.
The Assam government provides free treatment to children afflicted with cerebral palsy under the ‘Asha Navjeevan Prayas’ programme.
Cerebral palsy refers to a group of disorders that hamper a person’s ability to move and maintain balance, muscle tone and posture.
It is the most common congenital motor disability affecting millions of children in the world.
According to GMCH sources, the hospital is likely to register 1500 children for treatment during the camp.
Doctors screening the children will also decide which cases can be treated here and which require to be referred to hospitals outside the state for more advanced treatment.
“Doctors a tour hospital will start the treatment of children who have arrived at the camp from today,” said GMCH superintendent Abhijit Sarma.

However, guardians arriving in the camp without their wards will be able to register their names.
The government has also set up registration desks for such children in different districts across the state.
Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a tweet that the camp has been set up to address the medical and financial needs of patients.
“Hundreds of people at GMCH since morning for the 2nd cerebral palsy camp for their kids as part of our commitment to address medical & financial needs of such families. This camp is a result of our outreach program for children with critical ailments,” Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.
