A herd of wild elephants trampled a woman to death and damaged several bighas of crops and many properties at Demow’s Sitolia Gorkha Sapori in Sivsagar district on May 12.
As per reports, a herd of wild elephants created panic among the villagers in the region at night on May 12.
The deceased has been identified as Phulmoti Pegu alias Manita Pegu.
According to sources, the woman tried to escape from the wild elephants but failed to do so.
Deben Pegu, husband of the deceased, was also injured in the man-animal conflict.
Locals alleged that no officials from Forest department and police reached the spot though the villagers informed about the incident in the morning.
Further locals shouted slogans against the forest department officials and said, “They (forest officials) come only when elephant dies. Whenever people lose their lives in man-elephant conflict the officials don’t come.”
The villagers urged the Assam Environment and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya and the local MLA to take immediate steps in the matter.
