Shillong: The Northeast of India, a region known for its stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity, is facing a growing threat from climate change.

Recognizing this urgency, the Climate Group, part of the Under2 Coalition, convened the first-ever Northeast Climate Forum in Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya on August 2.

The forum brought together senior government officials from six northeastern states–Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura– alongside regional civil society organizations (CSOs).

This gathering aimed to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange in tackling climate challenges unique to the region.

The forum highlighted the critical need for regional coordination on climate action. While the states share similar challenges, a platform for pooling resources and working together has been lacking.

Discussions identified the need for more research-backed technical expertise to design and implement effective climate projects.

Additionally, participants emphasized the importance of accessing green funds, financial instruments that support environmentally sustainable practices.

Building capacity through training and workshops for government officials was another key takeaway.

The forum also recognized the value of showcasing the ongoing climate work being done in the region to a global audience.

Padma Shri awardee Jadav Payeng, also known as the “Forest Man of India,” delivered an inspiring address, highlighting the power of individual action in environmental stewardship.

This forum is part of the Under2 Coalition, a global network of subnational governments committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Dr. Divya Sharma, India Executive Director for Climate Group, emphasizes, “The North-East’s natural beauty is a treasure threatened by climate change. State governments need to be prepared. The forum united key stakeholders to develop a shared vision for climate action.”
