Guwahati: Assam has been experiencing scorching temperatures, with highs running 6-7 degrees Celsius above normal, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati.

“Most of the state has seen a surge in maximum temperatures. Guwahati itself is 6 degrees Celsius hotter than usual, while Tezpur is sweltering at a staggering 8.4 degrees above normal,” said Sanjay Shaw, director of the RMC.

Other Assam towns like Silchar, Dhubri, and Jorhat are facing similar conditions.

On Thursday, Guwahati peaked at a scorching 38.2 degrees Celsius, a full 6.2 degrees above average. Tezpur was even hotter, reaching a maximum of 39.5 degrees Celsius, a staggering 8.4 degrees higher than normal.

The lack of rain is the culprit behind the oppressive heat and humidity, according to the weather department. However, there’s good news on the horizon: Assam can expect heavy rain next week.

“A cyclonic storm is expected to move north towards Bangladesh and neighboring areas of the West Bengal coast by Sunday,” explained Shaw.

“This storm has the potential to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm. As a result, Assam and other northeastern states can expect rain with thunderstorms and strong winds starting next Tuesday,” he said.

The widespread rain is expected to bring a significant drop in temperatures, with highs potentially falling below 30 degrees Celsius next week.

Meanwhile, some districts have already begun adjusting school schedules to accommodate the extreme heat, advising students to start classes earlier in the mornings.
