The Indo-Bhutan border villages in Udalguri district continues to be affected by human-animal conflict

The wild elephants, which come down from the reserve forest along the Indo-Bhutan border area, continue to create terror and trample humans creating fear and panic among the border populace.

A herd of wild elephants earlier trampled a 16-year-old boy – Rupali Toppo – daughter of Baranbas Toppo and Jasinta Toppo at Badlapara Tea Estate under Dimakuchi Police Station in Udalguri district on October 7 night.

Following the incident, a large number of tea garden labourers gheraoed the bungalow of the manager of the tea estate following which the manager, Arup Baruah, assured the labourers of due compensation by the garden management.

Talking to Northeast Now over the telephone on Monday, Baruah said, “I have taken the necessary measures for ex-gratia compensation to the family of the victim and the injured by the garden management.”

He further stated that the demand of power fencing is not a viable option as it would block the natural corridors of the jumbos which they use as a passage and it would be detrimental towards maintaining ecological balance.

It is pertinent to mention that three persons have lost their lives and one wild elephant has been killed this month till date.
