The 48 hours general strike called by Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) ended peacefully on Thursday amid sporadic incidences of violence reported from several parts of the State.

The bandh brought normal life to a standstill even as protesters blocked streets at different locations in Imphal area by burning tyres and logs.

MUSU volunteers also blocked the National Highway 102 stretch between the Manipur University main gate and Singjamei.

Commercial establishments kept their shutters down, educational institutions remained closed while government offices registered thin attendance.

Passenger vehicles like inter-state, inter-district buses and auto services stayed off the road, though a few private vehicles plied in the streets.

Hospitals and pharmacies, however, remained open.

Meanwhile, the MUSU has reiterated their resolve to continue with their agitation till the controversial Vice Chancellor of Manipur University, Adya Prasad Pandey, is removed from the post.

The students’ body also condemned both the State and Central government for ‘shielding’ Pandey and keeping the career of students on peril.

Meanwhile, the university community strongly condemned the brutal and violent actions of the Manipur Police against the students who were holding a protest in democratic ways.

While the MUSU’s agitation demanding the removal of Pandey has reached 50 days, there is no visible sign of the protest to end.
