A high-level official language inspection committee team of UGC on Friday visited Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) at Rono Hills near Itanagar to inspect use of ‘Hindi’ as an official language in the varsity.

The team from University Grants Commission (UCG) was led by the commission’s joint secretary Dr Ajay Kumar Khanduri.

Dr Khanduri, who was accompanied by three other members of the commission on the day also sat for a meeting at the university’s council hall to discuss in this regard.

In the meeting, RGU vice-chancellor Prof Saket Kushwaha, registrar Prof Tomo Riba, administrative officers, deans and heads of departments were also present.

Emphasising on the need for Hindi in official works like filing of notes and writing letters, the UGC officers stated that Hindi is the official language of the country and RGU being a central university should follow rules as decided by the government.

Dr Khanduri also emphasised on the use of e-governance and e-office.

He stated that there is a need to provide skill developing center where Hindi speaking, writing, typing etc can be trained.

He also advised the Arunachalees to preserve their local dialect by using the ‘Devanagari’ script.

Commission advisor Ursela Minz pointed out the specific goals that the university should achieve as per UGC’s official language guidelines.

RGU’s Hindi officer Gumpi Nguso gave a brief power point presentation regarding the performance of the University in terms of using Hindi as it official language.

The UGC team, which is in Itanagar for two days, also visited all the departments of the university on the day.
