The students of Golaghat Engineering College (GEC) are facing a bleak future as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) refused to give approval to it.

There are a total of 92 students pursuing their studies in Golaghat Engineering College.

AICTE, the apex statutory body and national level council for technical education under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, dashed off a letter to the department of higher education (technical) of Assam government on April 30 last.

Through the letter (a copy of which is available with Northeast Now), the AICTE informed the Assam government over the rejection of its application seeking approval for the GEC.

It is to be noted that GEC is yet to get accreditation from the AICTE and it is still under the process of approval for getting accreditation.

Non-submission of documents relating to the infrastructure, non-submission of details and proof about medical facility and counseling arrangements, non-satisfactory PCs to students’ ration, shortage of books and journals in the library, non-availability of library management software and non-availability of amenities area and cafeteria are some of the deficiencies found of AICTE in the college.

The college authority also failed to provide a list giving titles of book and volumes of each purchased for the library.

Non-existence of feedback mechanism for students and teachers and lack of provision for sports facilities are some other deficiencies found by the AICTE for which it rejected the application of the state government seeking accreditation and permission for GEC.

However, the AICTE in its letter said that after the establishment of infrastructure facilities as per the requirements, the state government can apply for the letter of approval.

When contacted, Dr Satyajit Paul, principal of GEC, refused to give any statement regarding the whole matter.

Inaugurated by Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on February 5 this year, Golaghat Engineering College is the sixth government engineering college of Assam, located at Bogorijeng area in Golaghat.

The college is currently offering 4-year degree course in three branches namely Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

The first batch of students got admitted to this college in August, 2018.
