Tata Sons on Friday said former Tata Sons director R. Venkataramanan, who has been summoned for questioning in the Air Asia investigation, will appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The Enforcement Directorate summoned former Tata Sons director Venkataramanan to appear before it on February 10 at 10 am at its Delhi office for questioning, say media reports.

Venkataramanan will be questioned by the ED under the PMLA Act 2002.

R Venkataramanan was a former non-executive nominee director of Tata Sons.

The Enforcement Directorate on January 23 issued summons to AirAsia officials, including its CEO Tony Fernandes for questioning in February.

Media reports quoted Tata Sons as saying that based on a due inquiry undertaken by Air Asia India, there has been no wrongdoing by him.

As per reports, Venkataramanan, a former Tata Trusts Managing Trustee, quit Tata Trusts in 2019 amid allegations of misuse of IT exemptions.

Regarding media reports that Venkataramanan had ignored summons by the ED, Tata Sons stated the ED summons have been received by Venkataramanan and he would attend to the summons.

A media report quoted a statement by Tata Sons issued on Friday: “A section of the media has reported that R. Venkataramanan had ignored summons by the ED and agencies on three occasions.”

The statement also said: “Such an allegation is factually incorrect. Mr Venkataramanan has not ignored summons from ED or any other agency.”

The Tata Sons spokesperson in the statement claimed: “Based on due enquiry undertaken by Air Asia India Limited, there has been no wrongdoing by R Venkataramanan.”
