Security measures have been beefed up in Manipur in view of the Republic Day celebrations after a boycott call by Coordination Committee, an umbrella organisation of Manipur based armed groups popularly known as CorCom.

CorCom also called 18-hour general strike on Republic Day from midnight of January 25 till 6pm of January 26.

In view of the boycott and possible move to carry out “sabotage activities” by the underground groups, the Assam Rifles troops under Inspector General of Assam Rifles (IGAR-South) has intensified security measures within the state to foil any such attempt.

The Assam Rifles have launched coordinated and concerted efforts with all security agencies including state police. The units under IGAR (South) have made a number apprehensions of active cadres and also made recoveries in terms of improvised explosive materials, grenades , weapon and ammunition causing a huge setback to the insurgent groups.

The recoveries include large quantities of explosives placed along the highways, four Chinese hand grenades and large caches of arms and ammunition.

Mention may be made here that the state Police commandos, besides patrolling, have been carrying out sudden combing and search operations in various parts of the valley districts and state capital since last two weeks.
