Mizoram took the top spot in a Niti Aayog report on the overall performance in health index among smaller states in India. The report, released on Tuesday, showed Tripura followed by Manipur topping the list in terms of annual incremental performance.

The ranking is based on 23 indicators which are further grouped into Health Outcomes, Governance and Information, and Key Inputs/Processes. The performance and improvement are measured over a two-year period.
In the composite index score and rank highlighted by the report, compared to the base year 2015-16 where Mizoram scored 73.70 and topped the list among smaller states, the total score of the state increased to 74.97 in the reference year 2017-18. The state to take the second spot Manipur scored 57.78 while Meghalaya scored 56.83.
The data was released in the second edition of ‘Healthy States, Progressive India,’ which is an annual systematic performance tool to measure the performance of the States and UTs. It ranks States and Union territories (UTs) based on their year-on-year incremental change in health outcomes and their overall performances. The ranking is categorized as Larger States, Smaller States and UTs.
The ranking is based on 23 indicators which are further grouped into Health Outcomes, Governance and Information, and Key Inputs/Processes. The performance and improvement are measured over a two year period.
Among the larger states, Kerala topped the list followed by Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra in terms of overall performance while Haryana, Rajasthan and Jharkand bagged the top three lists when it came to annual incremental performance. Chandigarh and Dadra and Nagar Haveli bagged the top spots among UTs in terms of overall performance and annual incremental performance.
The report was developed by NITI Aayog with technical assistance from World Bank.
The Congress party released a statement on seeing the report saying such indicators which were assessed during the rule of the Lalthanhawla-led Congress party showed the good performance of the party in terms of health sector development.
