Dhubri police have arrested one person for accepting bets for the India-Pakistan World Cup match.

A team of Dhubri police led by B Basumatary, officer-in-charge of Dhubri Sadar police station, carried out a raid in a house located at Nuniyapatty of Ward No 10 of Dhubri town and arrested 27-year-old Rajesh Shah.

The police team also recovered about Rs 22,000 in cash, mobile phones and other materials used for betting purpose from Rajesh Shah’s possession.

Trinayan Bhuyan, deputy superintendent of police (HQ), Dhubri, said the investigations revealed that Shah would have accepted bets starting from the toss to the number of boundaries to be hit in the entire match.

Earlier in May, the Dhubri police had arrested as many as seven bookies from different parts of the district for operating a betting racket during the IPL tournament and also seized a sum of Rs 5 lakh in cash from the possession of one such bookie operated from Jhagrarpar area of Dhubri town on May 7, 2019.

The two accused namely Sohidul Islam and Alomgir Islam were arrested along with Rs 5 lakh in cash and two phones were also seized from the bookies of Jhagraarpar area during an operation led by Nirupam Hazarika, additional SP of Dhubri on May 7.

On May 8, three bookies were arrested from Ward No 5 of Dhubri town while on May 13,two bookies were arrested from Chagolia Bazar area under Golakganj police station of Dhubri district, police said.

Although bets in IPL or international cricket matches are illegal in the country but it is common in Dhubri.

Three drug peddlers arrested

Dhubri police led by Trinayan Bhuyan, deputy superintendent of police (HQ), Dhubri, arrested three drug paddlers along with huge consignments of banned cough syrups and tablets from different parts of the district during a special drive launched against drug paddlers.

The accused have been identified as Habibul Rahman resident of Ward No 9 of Dhubri town, Mozadul Ahmed and Mohibul Islam, both are residents of Chagolia Part III village under Golakganj police station of Dhubri district respectively.

Over and above, 450 bottles of contraband cough syrup under the brand name ‘ESkuf DX’ and huge number of tablets under the brand name ‘R7’ were also recovered from the possession of the alleged drugs paddlers, police said.

All the accused were produced before the Dhubri court on Monday and they were sent to the judicial custody.
