Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday called on Union defence minister Rajnath Singh at the latter’s office in New Delhi and requested him to consider setting up a National Level Training Institute for Armed Forces in Assam.

Expressing his hope that Assam and Northeast would benefit immensely from his leadership of the Armed Forces, Sonowal said that in spite of significant deployment of Armed forces for guarding the borders and for tackling insurgency in Assam, the state does not have a single institution of Armed Forces.

He informed the Defence minister that insurgency in the region has been controlled to a large extent with full support of the Army and exuded confidence that law and order situation of the state will further improve in the near future.

The chief minister apprised the Union minister about various steps taken by the State government to inculcate spirit of nationalism in the youth starting with elaborate three days celebration of Independence Day, holding many national and international sports and other events.

Sonowal said that the required land for the institute would be provided by the Assam Government.

The chief minister also observed that the national level training institution will inspire the youth of Assam and the Northeast to join armed forces and will promote nationalism and national integration.
