Police have arrested one accused involved in the murder of Assam police commando Girish Dutta at Makum in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.

Police officials said a special investigating team of Assam police on Tuesday arrested one Mintu Chetia for his alleged involvement in the incident.

37-year-old Dutta of Assam Police Commando Battalion was stabbed to death by an unidentified gang on early Monday in Makum.

When Dutta was returning to his home in Ashok Nagar from Tingrai, he got into a heated argument with a group of unidentified people over an accident on NH-38.

While he left the spot after the incident, the unidentified group of men followed Dutta to his home, dragged him out and stabbed him to death on the road in front of his father.

The incident sparked massive outrage among the locals of Makum. On Monday morning, the locals blocked the NH-38 highway demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.

“Accused Chutia who was at large after the incident, has been arrested from Barekuri Borgaon area in Makum this morning and he is being interrogated,” Asif Ahmed, additional superintendent of police (ASP), Tinsukia told reporters.

Dutta, an accomplished police trainer, was posted at Police Training College in Dergaon and had come to his Makum home only a day before.
