A six-member delegation of the Tripura CPI-M under the leadership of former chief minister and present Opposition leader Manik Sarkar on Tuesday met state chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb at his official residence and submitted a memorandum demanding his immediate intervention to stop all post-poll violence and restore peace in the State.

Sarkar thanking the chief minister for keeping their request to meet them in a short notice and disclosed this during a press conference in the party headquarters later in Agartala.

“After there was a protest from all corners we felt that no more attacks will take place but since the declaration of the election results till today there have been several organized attacks. This is one of the media in a democracy to freely express and attack on this is shameful. Immediately the government should take measures to stop all these attacks. Steps should be taken against all those involved in all these attacks. We have noticed that CPI-M offices, leaders and cadres are the main targets of these attacks. Former MPs, MLAs and former MLAs beside representative of various elected bodies were also attacked and it all has come in the media,” Sarkar said.
He added, “Along with it we noticed since the Assembly election result, extortion started and in the middle, it stopped but again it has resumed after the declaration of Lok Sabha result. Several groups in the name of the same party are going to the same house demanding money and it is no small amount of hundred or thousand rupees, rather the demands are crossing even Rs five or 10 lakh. Many after selling their belongings right from domestic animals to jewellery have paid the extortion money to stay in their houses.”
Sarkar, also a politburo member said that the chief minister patiently not only read their note regarding the ongoing post-poll violence also, but also gave his views on which sectors he would give immediate importance from the government side to improve the situation.
Sarkar said that the delegation has requested the chief minister to stop all violence in the State that started since March 3, 2018, the result date of the Assembly election where BJP-IPFT came to power dethroning the 25 years Left Front government in Tripura.
According to Sarkar, the chief minister has an added advantage in bringing the situation under control as he is also the home minister as well as the president of the party in power in the State.

The CPI-M leader also expressed his concern to the chief minister that in a few minority residing areas there were organized attacks to terrorize them.
Moreover, in few mixed populated areas, some incidents were organized to divide the population on the basis of tribal and non-tribal communities and break the heritage ethnic unity among the population.
Sarkar appealed to the chief minister from to immediately take steps to maintain peace and harmony in the State.
