Assam girl Priyanka Sarkar has been selected as the ‘2019 Wetland Ambassador’ by the Society of Wetland Scientists(SWS), a USA based organization aiming in conservation and restoration of wetlands.

The SWS Wetland Ambassadors Programme is an international student research programme in which graduate students participate in a visiting research fellowship at an institution outside their home country that features rigorous wetland research in the student’s area of interest.

The topic of her Wetland Ambassador Fellowship Project is ‘Can biochar increase carbon sequestration in wetland restoration projects?’

She will be working on the project at Drexel University in Pennsylvenia of USA under the guidance of Elizabeth Watson from the later part of this month.

Priyanka is currently doing her PhD from Assam University in Silchar.

She completed her PG degree from Assam University with a specialization in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment.

Hailing from Bongaigaon, she earlier studied the potential for concurrent rice-fish culture in the wetlands of Assam.

A grant of up to $5000 will be awarded by SWS during the period of the fellowship project.
