The Capital Complex police under the supervision of the superintendent of police (SP), Tumme Amo, have in the last 48 hours seized Rs 12.27 lakh from several people for violation of the model code of conduct (MCC) in force after the announcement of the April 11 elections.
Capital Complex consists of Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa. With the MCC having come into effect, flying squads, static surveillance and police teams of the Capital Complex have seized cash amounting to Rs 42, 60, 100 till date.
SP Amo informed that taking into consideration the forthcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha polls in the state, the police have so far seized 14 smooth-bore breech loading guns, 15 live rounds of ammunitions, 2 air guns and 219 local daos (machetes) from various check points.
Amo said that besides seizing large quantities of liquor, many posters and banners defacing the town and public properties have also been removed by the police. Motor vehicle checking is also being conducted in the Capital Complex and the police has so far detected 15 violators and imposed fines on them, Amo said.
The SP has requested the people not to carry such huge amounts of cash inviting inconvenience. As per the Election Commission guidelines, every seizure of Rs 10 lakh and above shall be investigated by the Income Tax department, he said.
Meanwhile, the Lower Dibang Valley Police on Friday said it has till date seized Rs 1 lakh in cash, a local made pistol with 8 rounds of live ammunition, 50 grams of cannabis, 93 machetes, 125 litres of local liquor and 8 cases and 16 bottles of Indian made foreign liquor. The district has so far seen the deposit of 749 firearms.
