Swami Vivekananda’s 156th birth anniversary was celebrated in Dharmanagar sub division of Tripura on Friday.

A colourful procession was organized from Dharmanagar Vivekananda Bhawan to commemorate the 156th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.  Students from different schools of Golden Valley, BBI, Dharmanagar girls, Paddapur participated in the procession that passed through the busy thoroughfare of the town. The principals of the schools also participated in the procession.

It may be mentioned that the union government in 1984 took a decision to celebrate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda as National Youth Day. Subsequently from 1985 onwards the day has been celebrated as National Youth Day.

The government felt that the philosophy of Vivekananda and his ideals are a great source of inspiration for the Indian youth. So, it was declared that his birthday will be observed as National Youth Day.

This day is of great importance in the academic calendar. Schools and colleges across the country take out processions, organize speeches, recitations, youth conventions and various music, sports and essay-writing competitions on this day.

Swami Vivekananda’s writings and lectures have inspired many youth organisations, study circles and service projects.

National Youth Festival is also organized annually and includes cultural activities that are both competitive and non-competitive in nature.
