In an interesting twist to the tale ahead of ensuing Assembly elections in Tripura, State Governor Tathagata Roy on Wednesday submitted a detailed report on the prevailing law and order situation in the State to the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

It is learnt the Governor raised the issue of growing discontent with the State Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and apprised the Union Home Minister about the fact that Sarkar had asked the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police not to attend a meeting convened by Roy at Raj Bhawan recently to review the law and order situation ahead of polls.

State Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar had on that occasion dissuaded both the top administrative and police officials not to attend another meeting as according to Sarkar, the matters were already discussed with the Governor in an earlier meeting a week ago.

Ironically, powerful Assam minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in-charge of elections in Tripura, Himanta Biswa Sarma had claimed during his campaign in the State that the law and order situation in the State is not at all conducive for conducting free and fair polls.

Last week, Sarma had officially told the Election Commission of India (ECI) in New Delhi that the prevailing situation in Tripura is not conducive for holding free and fair election and asked for adequate corrective measures.

Sarma had expressed apprehension before the ECI, the polls might not be free from violence.

“For last one week CPI-M has unleashed a reign of terror politics in Tripura and for this we met the EC for a free and fair election,” Sarma had told media persons after his meeting with the ECI.

The Assembly election in Tripura is scheduled to be held in the month of February as the tenure of the present Assembly expires on March 06 next.
