All India Mahila Congress President and Member of Parliament (MP) from Silchar, Sushmita Dev, on Monday humiliated video journalists working for various TV channels in the state.

While, briefing the media on her stand on Citizens Amendment Bill (CAB) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), she barred all regional channels from shooting any of her comments or her remarks on these issues at  Silchar’s Cachar Club.

Her anger came to the fore following widespread coverage by regional television channels of protest and black flags waived by a group of people against her rally at Madhurband on old Lakhipur Road on Sunday.

These protestors also burnt her effigy  accusing her of Supporting the  Bill in the Parliament and as a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

On Monday at Cachar Club, she said, “I don’t have any problem if someone burns my effigy or shows black flags but I will not move away from my stand of supporting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.”

It may be mentioned that the protest by people at Madhurbond, which has been considered as a stronghold of the Congress over the years in terms of votes, has apparently given rise to gossips among various quarters that this will adversely impact the Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Dev is most likely to contest in Congress ticket from Silchar seat.

Clarifying her stand on her association with the Congress, Sushmita Dev said, “I was, I am, and I will be with the Congress. Congress is in my blood. Even if I am not given the ticket to contest from Silchar in the upcoming elections, it will be absolutely okay with me and I shall always remain with the Congress till the rest of my life.”
