A 16-year-old girl from Bakulia in Karbi Anglong district was rescued by a woman with the help of auto-rickshaw drivers from Diphu Railway Station on Wednesday evening while she was being taken away by a youth from West Bengal.

The auto-rickshaw drivers later handed over the girl to custody of Karbi Students Association (KSA) Simeon Rongphar faction.

KSA general secretary Thomson Rongpi informed that the girl was spotted at Diphu Railway Station by a woman from the same village, Bakulia, where the girl resides. The woman went to Diphu Railway Station for dropping her daughter.

The woman recognized the girl as one from her village. On seeing the woman, the girl tried to flee from the scene, but some auto-rickshaw drivers at Diphu Railway Station managed to get hold of both the girl and the youth.

The auto-rickshaw drivers took the two to the office of the KSA (Simeon Rongphar faction) near the railway station.

After confirming about the identities of the girl and the youth, the KSA members handed over them to Diphu Town Outpost.

According to police sources, the youth identified as Arun Mandal (22), son of Lt. Naren Mandal of Kariala in Malda of West Bengal, came close to the girl for over a year now.

The youth from West Bengal came to Diphu, the headquarters of Karbi Anglong district, by train and arrived on Wednesday. On the same day, he went to Bakulia, 52 km from here, to meet the girl.

The youth asked the girl to wait at Bakulia market and from there the duo came to Diphu. Around 8 pm on Wednesday, the girl with the youth reached Diphu Railway Station to board a train and the woman from the girl’s village noticed her.

A case [No.07/19 US-366 (A) of IPC] has been registered in Diphu Police Station.
