In a joint operation, Manipur Police along with units of 9 Sector Assam Rifles apprehended an alleged sympathizer of a proscribed underground group(UG) and recovered a huge consignment of ammunition from a place in Manipur’s Imphal West district on December 14.
The operation was launched by a combined team of Keithelmanbi and Thoubal battalions under Assam Rifles along with Imphal west district commandos in Tera bazar under Imphal West district and apprehended a woman sympathizer of proscribed ZUF (Zeliangrong United Front) along with huge consignment of ammunition, the Assam Rifles (South) PRO said in a press release on Friday. The ammunition consignment consisted of 1120 rounds of 7.62 mm AK-47, 20 Chinese hand grenades along with 20 Detonators.
The apprehendee is the elder sister of Self Styled Joint Secretary Azona Kamei of Publication and Information Department of ZUF and also the sister in law of Darei Chiru who is Self styled Army Chief of ZUF. The arrested individual had also been previously involved in transportation of arms and ammunition.
The recovery of large quantity ammunition is a major success on the part of the Assam Rifles & Manipur Police to thwart nefarious designs of the UG groups, it further claimed.
