Aizawl, the capital city of  the tiny Northeastern state of  Mizoram, is the first and only city in India to become completely free of the  sound of honking by vehicles,  that too without any government policy in this regard.

The people of Mizoram have themselves taken a step to eradicate honking while driving, mostly to reduce noise pollution. Although, there’s no official help or legislation, people like to follow this rule for their own benefit.

A short film called, Tranquility shows how the people of Aizawl came together to make their city completely horn free.

This movie has been filmed by six youths from Nagaland and Mizoram  on the streets of Aizawl. The six youths are: Aldrin Zosangliana, Malsawmtluanga, Irene Lalruatkimi, Napoleon Thanga, Louise Haunhar, Peka Zote, Lallianpuii, Ruata, and Lalzidinga.

Choreographer, actor and director Prabhudeva praised the no-honking practised by people of Aizawl after watching the film.

The people of Mizoram are known to show tremendous patience while they have to move at the snail’s pace in their vehicles because of   traffic jams  that is common on the narrow streets of the hil state especially in Aizawl. The patience exhibited by commuters helps to prevent  chaos on the street.

With this initiative to eliminate noise pollution, Aizawl has set an example for the entire country to follow.
