With panchayat polls round the corner, political parties including ruling BJP and its ally AGP, opposition Congress and Sanmilita Gana Sakti are now adopting new strategies to woo voters in Dhemaji district.

The members of the political parties and their supporters are also seen busy with their contesting candidates so that they can capture maximum seats.

Though ruling party has pre-poll alliance with SGS, yet its ally AGP has fielded candidates of its own in many gaon panchayats in all five blocks in the district.

According to District Election department sources, altogether 2,155 candidates including 23 Zilla Parishad Members (ZPM), 181 Anchalik Panchayat Members (APM), 205 Gaon Panchayat President (GPP) and 1,746 Gaon Panchayat Members (GPM) are contesting in the poll.

14 GPMs were declared as elected uncontested after the scrutiny of nomination papers.

There are 690 polling stations, out of which 289 have been identified as sensitive, while 39 identified as hyper-sensitive. The polling stations are spread across in seven Zilla Parishads and five anchalaik panchayats and 62 gaon panchayats in Dhemaji district. Around 3.20 lakh voters (electoral revision going on) will exercise their franchise in 690 polling stations in the district. Jonai sub-division alone has about 1,18,547 electors including 59,888 males and 58,661 female, as per election department’s data.

Dhemaji sub divisional administration is conducting the panchayat elections in five ZPCs namely Dhemaji, Bordoloni, Muchkhowa, Sissiborgaon and Sissitongani and Jonai sub division is conducting the election in two ZPCs-Pub Jonai and Pachim  Jonai.

The district election department has been conducting phase-wise training for the presiding and polling officers.
