With the Panchayat Polls in Assam round the corner, a 22-year-old Gauhati University student has entered the fray for the first time. The rural body elections will be held in two phases in Assam on December 5 and 9.

Nandita Talukdar, a post graduate first semester student from Gauhati University, is first in his family to fight the Panchayat poll on Congress ticket from No 1 Panchatirtha Zila Parishad in Hajo.

She is contesting for the post of Zila Parishad member. Nandita is probably the youngest candidate this time to contest the rural body polls.

Nandita said she is in the fray to ‘do some good’ for her area. She said that she wants to see equitable socio-cultural and economic development in the area.

“Despite many assurances from various governments and political leadership our panchayat is far from development. There are many burning issues that I want to plead and resolve if I am given mandate by the people,” Nandita told reporters.

“I wish to guide the rural women and youths towards their empowerment and fulfil  Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s dream for new India,” she said.

“I am glad that I am the youngest candidate to contest the polls. I will leave no stone unturned to achieve this goal,” Nandita said.
