The elected Left Front councillors of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) including the Mayor Dr Prafullajit Sinha and Deputy Mayor Samar Chakraborty took part in a protest rally demanding restoration of a democratic atmosphere and peaceful environment to run different wards of the AMC.

Among the 49 wards of AMC, 45 ward councillors are from the Left Front.

The protesting councillors alleged that after the change of regime in the last Assembly elections and coming of BJP-IPFT to power, most of the AMC councillors have allegedly been facing different kind of threats and intimidation including ‘atrocities’ on elected women councillors by the ruling party supporters. “But despite police complaint, no step has been taken,” the protestors alleged.

Recently a video of pressure on a woman councilor, Bulti Biswas, 36 No ward at Camper Bazar area, by locals, all from the ruling BJP as alleged, demanding more work under various schemes, went viral.

Left councilors staged a protest march in the streets of Agartala criticizing strongly against the alleged atrocities on the councillors.

Deputy Mayor Samar Chakraborty alleged that the ruling supporters were pressurizing the elected councilor to sign resignation.

Chakraborty told that the agitated people with their ‘undemocratic’ demands abused councillors in the name of civic services.

“AMC never witnessed such kind of hooliganism by the activists of a political party,” said Chakraborty.

The councillors also alleged that they were abused with slang language and all ward members of AMC were also forced to tender their resignation due to threat and intimidation by ruling supporters.

They demanded immediate intervention of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and appealled to the State Government to allow all elected councillors of AMC to discharge their democratic duties.
