The Mizoram state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) SB Shashank has notified the final publication of electoral rolls on Thursday, according to the final roll published the upcoming Mizoram state assembly election in Mizoram will have 7,68,181 voters.

Talking to media in Aizawl SB Shashank said that 7878 voters were added to the draft roll published on July 31, 2018.

Aizawl district has the largest share of voters numbering almost one third of the total voters with 288322. Lunglei district has a fair share of 104930 voters. Siaha district has the least number with 38843 voters.

The chief electoral officer said that there were total deletions of 12452 voters and 20330 new voters added to exercise their franchise.

Like earlier electoral rolls females outnumber males in Mizoram by 19189 voters. There are a total of 374496 male voters and 393685 female voters.

SB Shashank confirmed that Bru electoral rolls were included in the final Mizoram roll. There was a huge protest in Mamit district over the enrolment of Bru refugees in the Mizoram electoral roll. However on the instruction of the Election Commission of India, revision of Bru rolls were conducted.

However, the Brus who are not willing to return to Mizoram, despite included in the final roll published on Thursday will not be able to exercise their franchise in the refugee camps in Tripura.

“Only those refugees who have returned to Mizoram will exercise their franchise, no polling stations will be set up in the camps,” SB Shashank said.

In the past elections, on the orders of the Election Commission of India, polling stations were set up in Bru refugee camps in Tripura.

The present Mizoram government’s term will expire on December 15, 2018, with the final publication of rolls, it can be presumed that the ECI may announce the state election soon.
