The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) made it clear on Friday that it would not get into any kind of alliance with Badruddin Ajmal’s the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) to fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Talking to media persons, the APCC president Ripun Bora said, “Just because the AIUDF has an understanding with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at the Centre that does not mean that the APCC will get into an alliance with the party in Assam to fight the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Right from our grass root level worker to the top party functionary – it is crystal clear to them that we are not getting into any kind of truck with the AIUDF in the 2019 general elections.”

Bora lashed out at the AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal for making the “alliance statement” on Thursday and questioned,    “How can there be an alliance between the Congress and the AIUDF when not a single party worker of ours wants alliance with AIUDF?”

The APCC president said it was only because of Ajmal’s “wrong decision”, the BJP could come to power during the 2016 Assembly polls in Assam. “Even if Ajmal tries all the tricks in his books to affect our base in the State, it would hardly matter to us,” he asserted.

Ripun Bora further claimed that the Congress in Assam was in a “strong position” at present to fight the 2019 polls. “The people of Assam have seen through the false promises of the Sonowal Government and the modus operandi of the saffron party. This time round, I just hope they will judiciously cast their votes.”

Bora informed that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Rahul Gandhi has assured APCC that without the State committee’s nod, the party would not form any alliance with the AIUDF. “We have already informed Rahul Gandhi that no Congress workers in Assam want alliance with the AIUDF. I hope he would keep this in mind before the LS polls,” Bora stated.
