Meghalaya Home Minister James Sangma on Wednesday launched the PA Sangma Chair Professor of Tribal Studies at the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) in Ri-Bhoi on Wednesday.
While thanking the USTM authority for honouring his father, former Lok Sabha Speaker, late PA Sangma, Home Minister Sangma said, “Relationship between teacher and student is such that it can never be separated. I am thankful to Mahbubul Hoque for honouring my late father with recognition of a Chair in his name in the University on the topic of Tribal Studies which was very near to his heart,” adding, “On behalf of my entire family, I thank USTM for this great honour.”
Home Minister Sangma also addressed a gathering of teachers and students on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan at USTM. He delivered the keynote address and hounoured senior professors with awards on the occasion.
Minister Sangma also said a competitive culture among the youths is necessary to move forward to excel in whatever they do and urged the youths from the northeastern region to inculcate that.
James Sangma also said “growth of the country has to be based on intellectual ideas and knowledge economy”.
He greeted all the teachers on the occasion of the Teachers’ Day and wished the students a bright future as it was also the day of Freshers’ Social at USTM on Wednesday.
The Minister also handed over certificates and tabs to sixteen USTM students for their hundred per cent attendance in the last academic session.
Earlier, in his welcome address, USTM Chancellor M Hoque recalled Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and said that teachers are the architect of society, they are the real transformers.
“We are celebrating Teachers’ Day as a mark of respect to the teachers of the country and appreciate their contribution to the society. One can never deny the role of a teacher in moulding an individual human being, thereby giving direction to the society, the nation and the world at large,” he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr PK Goswami, Vice Chancellor, USTM said that teachers are the backbone of the society and their role in shaping the lives of children and the young generation matters a lot. “A teacher’s role is highly demanding in the society,” he added.
The felicitated teachers include: Dr DK Sharma, Dr Rashmimala Kakoti, Dr PK Baruah, Dr Ranee Das, Dr Tarun Ch Sarma, Dr Bhabananda Baruah, Dr Thagiram Gogoi, Dr AC Talukdar, Dr Bilas Ch Das, Dr Garima Kalita, Dr Sujit Sikidar, Dr Enamul Karim, Dr AK Mishra, Dr JN Ganguli, Dr Jnanashri Bora, Dr Narayan Chetry, Dr Nirupama Devi, Dr Jonali Chetia, Dr Sobha Sarmah, Dr KK Kakati and Dr AK Sinha, stated a USTM press communiqué.
