Meghalaya Government is mulling to increase the insurance cover under the Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) from the current Rs 2.8 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

This was stated by State Health Minister AL Hek, after inaugurating the Laitkor Health Sub centre in Shillong on Saturday.

The Health Minister said that the insurance scheme of the State Government was a grand successand thagt the MHIS scheme is helping the people to a great extent, particularly the poor.

The minister appealed to the people to come forward and enroll themselves to enable them to avail financial aid at the time of hospitalization and treatment and reduce the ‘out-of-pocket expenses’ of the beneficiaries.

He also said the State Government is contemplating to inaugurate a state-of-the-art diagnostic centre in Shillong.

He said the government has identified two places for the project, including the Pasteur Institute in Shillong.

The Health Minister further said that the Conrad Sangma government is committed to provide affordable, accessible and quality health care services to all sections of the society, especially to the economically weaker section by opening more health centres in the State.
