Assam Govt to honour Sonal Mansingh with Srimanta Sankardeva Award

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday stated that the Srimanta Sankardeva Award for 2023 will be conferred to illustrious classical dancer, Sonal Mansingh.

This honour recognizes her immense contributions to promoting and preserving Indian cultural heritage through her remarkable work in Bharatanatyam and Odissi dance forms.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post on X said, “In our recent Cabinet meeting, we decided to confer Smt Sonal Mansingh with the Srimanta Sankardeva Award 2023. A Padma Vibhushan awardee, Smt. Mansingh has been a leading face of our cultural milieu and has contributed immensely to further Bharatiya traditions.”

Sonal Mansingh, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, has been a leading figure in India’s cultural landscape for decades.

Her dancing career, spanning over six decades, has taken her to the global stage, earning her numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and Kalidas Samman. She has also been nominated as a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, by the President of India.

The Srimanta Sankardeva Award is a fitting tribute to Sonal Mansingh’s tireless efforts in promoting Indian classical dance and culture.
