Manipur: Security forces intensify anti-insurgency ops, recover arms & ammo

Imphal: Security forces have intensified a large-scale anti-insurgency operation as Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi reviewed the law and order situation in Manipur.

Officials said that cordon and search operations (CASO) were carried out at the vulnerable locations in the valley districts on Friday.

A combined team of central forces, district commandos, and women police personnel conducted the operations at the villages of Wainem, Keinou Maning, and Ayokpa Khun in Bishnupur district.

A variety of arms and ammunition were recovered during the operations.

Simultaneously, another joint team of the centre and state forces launched operations at the foothills of Sekmai Parao, Sekmai Lailat, and Sekmai Thanga Leikai in the Imphal West district recovering a cache of arms and ammunition.

A police source also said that during the operation, the identities of over 200 villagers were verified.

The recovered items include one long-range improvised mortar (pumpi), one AK Rifle, one 303 bolt action rifle, one 12 bore single barrel gun, one 9 mm pistol along with one magazine, one .32 pistol along with one magazine, eleven hand grenades, eight detonators, one magazine of INSAS LMG and one tube launcher.

Along with these, one smoke bomb, a walkie-talkie-like set, eight tear gas shells, ten live rounds of SLR ammunition, seventeen live rounds of AK ammunition, ten live rounds of .303 Rifle, six live rounds of INSAS Rifle, two live rounds of 9mm, two improvise mortar shells and two carbine ammunition among others were also seized.

General Upendra Dwivedi who arrived at Imphal on Friday is assessing the deteriorating law and order situation of this ethnic violence-hit state. He will leave Imphal on Saturday.
