Infuriated over the Mizoram Tipper Association’s blockade on ‘outsider trucks’, Forum For The Protection of Non-Mizos, Silchar has planned an indefinite blockade of National Highway 54 at Lailapur in Cachar district.

The Mizoram Tipper Association (MTA), an umbrella body of all tipper truck drivers and owners in the Mizoram, in protest against the alleged illegal registration of non Mizo trucks in Mizoram launched a strike against ‘outsider trucks’.

According to Lalzarmawia, president of the MTA, nearly 50 commercial vehicles (trucks) owned by non-indigenous people who are outsiders, have been registered in Mizoram in violation of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, and asked the Mizoram government how these vehicles could get registration in the state.

He added that according to the rules, owners of commercial vehicle are not allowed to register outside their domicile state or without valid documents. According to him, the non-tribal truck owners have violated the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation, 1873, and worked beyond the subjects permitted by inner-line permit (ILP).

Lalzarmawia also said about 100 trucks from outside Mizoram are currently operating in the state and constitute almost 90 per cent trucks ferrying local goods and materials in the state. He alleged that the non-indigenous people are fixing separate rates of construction materials.

Earlier in May, the association had served an ultimatum to these trucks to stop operating inside the state and threatened to launch an agitation if truckers from outside continue to transport goods.
