Imphal: In a significant development, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh lauded the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the leading body of the Kuki community in the state, for endorsing the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.

The announcement came during a function in Imphal, where Singh expressed his appreciation for KIM’s conditional support of the NRC, viewing it as a step towards resolving ongoing issues and promoting long-term stability in Manipur.

The Kuki Inpi Manipur’s statement stated that the NRC could be implemented in Kuki-Zo areas, provided it strictly adheres to constitutional rules and principles.

The NRC, originally established after the 1951 Census of India, is a register documenting all legal Indian citizens to identify and deport illegal immigrants.

The demand for NRC implementation has been particularly strong among the Meitei community in Manipur, which has organized peace marches both within the state and internationally.

These marches advocate for the NRC’s enforcement as a means to safeguard citizenship rights and address illegal immigration issues.

The NRC’s implementation is backed by the 2003 amendment of the Citizenship Act of 1955.
