A total of 53,429 people have been taking shelter in 293 relief camps after being rendered homeless.

Guwahati: The overall flood situation in Assam remained grim on Saturday (July 6) with the deluge claiming six more lives, including four children, over the past 24 hours, and affecting nearly 24 lakh people across 29 districts of the state.

While two persons, including a child, perished in the flood waters in Charaideo, another man drowned in Tinsukia, and a child each died of drowning in Goalpara, Morigaon and Sonitpur districts, respectively. With this, the toll in floods this year reached 58, as per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) flood bulletin.    

As many as 23,96,648 people in 3,535 villages across 29 districts – Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, Karimganj, Nagaon, Hojai, Karbi Anglong, Morigaon, Kamrup Metropolitan, Kamrup, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, South Salmara and Dhubri, are still reeling under the flood waters, it said.

Dhubri is the worst-hit district with 7,97,918 people being affected, followed by Cachar (1,75,231), Darrang (1,63,218), Barpeta (1,31,246), Golaghat (1,09,470), Nalbari (1,05,372) and South Salmara (1,00,926).

A total of 53,429 people have been taking shelter in 293 relief camps after being rendered homeless, and 284 relief distribution centres are providing essential items to the flood victims, it added.

On the other hand, the flood waters have affected over 68,768 hectares of cropland and a total of 15,49,161 livestock and poultry across the flood-hit districts. Moreover, the floods have damaged dozens of houses, 126 roads, a couple of bridges, seven embankments, and several other infrastructures, it said.

Meanwhile, river Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level mark at Neamatighat, Tezpur, Dhubri and Goalpara, river Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang), Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri at Numaligarh, Jia Bharali at NT Road Crossing, Kopili at Dharamtul, Sankosh at Golakganj, Barak at AP Ghat and BP Ghat, and river Kushiyara at Karimganj, the ASDMA bulletin further said.
