SHILLONG: The Indian Forest Service Association (IFSA) has petitioned the Meghalaya chief secretary, urging for a central bureau of investigation (CBI) investigation into the demise of the state’s chief conservator of forests, N Luikham, who allegedly died by suicide at his residence on March 13.
In a letter addressed to Meghalaya chief secretary Donland Phillips Wahlang, Suneesh Buxy, the IFSA secretary general, highlighted that one of the contributing factors to the officer’s tragic decision was the purported allegation of sexual harassment made against him by an official within the Meghalaya government.
Buxy emphasized that Luikham had endured significant mental anguish due to these unfounded accusations, purportedly backed by influential figures within the state’s mining sector.
He noted that no substantial evidence had been uncovered to support the allegations against the deceased officer.

The letter, also sent to union environment minister Bhupender Yadav, underscored the need for a thorough and impartial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Luikham’s death.
Buxy urged for stringent action against any individuals found culpable of abetting or negligently contributing to the tragedy, with the aim of preventing similar incidents in the future.
IFSA mourned Luikham’s passing, describing him as an exemplary officer known for his integrity and ethical conduct.
The association lamented his untimely demise, acknowledging the loss to the conservation efforts of natural resources.
