Guwahati: Election Commissioner Arun Goel has reportedly resigned from his post on Saturday.

As per reports, the official’s resignation has been accepted by the President of India.

While he resigned on Saturday, his tenure was till 2027.

A gazette notification regarding his resignation read, “In pursuance of clause (1) of Section 11 of The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the President is pleased to accept the resignation tendered by Shri Arun Goel, Election Commissioner with effect from the 09th March 2024.”

It may be mentioned that according to clause (1) of Section 11 of the law, the Chief Election Commissioner or an Election Commissioner may, at any time, resign from office by giving it in writing to the President.

His resignation came just a few days ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The election commission panel is supposed to have three members and it was already short of one. But, with Goel resigning, the panel would be left with only one member.

Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar is the only member left in the panel, reports stated.

It may also be mentioned that Goel took charge as an election commissioner in November 2022.

He was a former IAS officer who before taking charge as EC, was Union Heavy Industries Secretary.

He took voluntary retirement on November 18, 2022, and was appointed as an election commissioner a day later.
