TINSUKIA: Police in Tinsukia district of Assam arrested three student leaders following their organization of a protest at Tinsukia Thana Chariali area, calling for the repeal of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The apprehended leaders are identified as Zahiuddin Laskar, the general secretary of Raijor Dal, Umananda Moran, secretary of Tinsukia District Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, and Ratul Roy, secretary of Dhubri district Krishak Mukti.

In response to the central government’s announcement of implementing the CAA before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and the Nari Mukti Sangram Samiti (NMSS) organized a protest at Tinsukia in Assam urging for the repeal of the CAA.

Earlier this month, union home minister Amit Shah declared that the CAA, enacted in 2019, would be enforced before the Lok Sabha elections this year after the issuance of rules in this regard.

The CAA, passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019, has sparked intense debate and widespread protests across India.

It amends the Citizenship Act of 1955 to provide expedited citizenship to migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian communities who entered India on or before December 31, 2014, due to facing religious persecution in their home countries.
