AIZAWL: A 30-year-old man was arrested in Aizawl for attempting to send heroin for a drug addict, who live in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore, through a traveller, who was planning to visit the southern Indian city, an official of Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department said.

The accused Lalrohlua, a resident of Aizawl’s Durtlang Leitan Ramthar locality, was produced before the magistrate on Thursday, excise and narcotics department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga said.

He said that the drug addict, who currently lives in Vellore, has recently contacted Lalrohlua for heroin.

Subsequently, Lalrohlua approached one C Laldinsanga, who was planning to travel to Vellore in Tamil Nadu via a flight, and handed over to him a small parcel containing 5 grams of heroin, he said.

Being suspicious of the parcel due to its weight, Laldinsanga opened it and discovered the heroin inside the parcel and then complained the matter to the excise and narcotics department, Peter said.

Acting upon the complaint, officials of the department rushed to Laldinsanga’s residence in Aizawl’s Chhinga veng locality and seized the heroin and registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Act, 1985 on Monday, he said.

By this time the accused Lalrohlua has absconded and remained elusive.

Subsequently, the excise department officials launched a man hunt for the accused and he was traced through his social media accounts and mobile phone number, which Laldinsanga had saved in his mobile phone, Peter said.
