IMPHAL: Violence in Manipur continues unabated as a 28-year-old village volunteer lost his life and four others sustained injuries in gunfights with ‘militants’ along the inter-district areas of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts of the state on Tuesday (February 13).

The intermittent exchanges of gunfire that started Monday (February 12) night continued on Tuesday (February 13) amid regular intervals at different strategic villages in areas such as Khamelok, Pukhao Shantipur, Shabungkhok Khunou, Sangrram, Khamelok, Sanasabi, Saibol Maning and Simol, the Manipur police said.

The dead village volunteer was later identified as Likmabam Damocha (28), a resident of Khamelok village in Imphal East district of Manipur.

He was hit by a bullet on his chest in the fierce gunfight and died on the spot, the Manipur police confirmed.

Four other “village volunteers” – Moirangthem Naocha (22), Laishram Ihulakpa (26), Sagolsem Loya (25) and Sinam Sam (25) sustained injuries in the exchange of gunfire.

The injured persons were promptly transported to the Raj Medicity Hospital, Imphal, the Manipur police added.

Meanwhile, at least two militants might have lost their lives in the gun battles as seen from the drones launched by the “village volunteers” at the militants’ hideouts, sources informed.

At the time of filing this report, the gunfight continues.
