Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly‘s Budget Session got off to a tumultuous start on Monday as Governor Gulab Chand Kataria’s inaugural address was abruptly cut short after only 1 minute and 20 seconds due to a walkout by opposition members.

Opposition members staged the walkout expressing dissatisfaction with the address. 

The session is scheduled to run until February 28.

Legislator Rakibul Hussain speaking to the media said that they were dissatisfied with the Governor’s address as it did not cover the issues of Assam.

Hussain claimed that the government has been misusing the police to oppress the opposition.

He added that the important facts have not been discussed in the address.

Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition said that while the government talks of development, there is no proper fact to back it.

“Even law and order issues have not been addressed by the government. We were not given the copies of the speech by the Governor”, he added.

Saikia added that while the address mentions of development in the state, it is only by putting the people in the state in misery. “There is no actual development which can be seen”, he said.

He further said that the government even failed to bring justice to SI Junmoni Rabha.

The Assam Legislative Assembly’s Budget Session commenced today in Guwahati with several crucial addresses in line.

Finance Minister Ajanta Neog is scheduled to present the state budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 on February 12. 

She has promised a “realistic” budget that addresses the state’s economic needs and aspirations.
