Twenty-five years of convention on biological diversity – Safeguarding Life on Earth – under the theme ‘Celebrating 25 years of Action for Biodiversity’ was held at Forest colony community hall in Wokha on Tuesday.

Member secretary, Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB), and Nagaland chief conservator of forest, Supongnukshi, in his keynote address, said the United Nation has proclaimed May 22 as the International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness on biodiversity issues.

He said under Wokha district, there are about 21 biodiversity management committees and expressed happiness to the various committees formed in various villages for their proper management. He urged them to keep up the good work.

In his address, Wokha additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Nokchasashi said there are about thousands of species of living creatures who co-exist and that loss of even one species affects our biodiversity. He added every species is important for our wellbeing.

Stating Nagaland is rich in biodiversity, Nokchasashi said it the responsibility of every individual to conserve it. He also pointed out that human beings contribute to the loss and degradation of biodiversity and appealed to create awareness on its conservation.

He also spoke on the government’s policy involving every community in every scheme for conservation of biodiversity.

The ADC also stressed that village functionaries need to play an important role for success of any programme and urged the village councils and biodiversity management committees in their respective villages to be sincere and dedicated and create awareness to bring change for the betterment of our future generation.

Nokchasashi also officially launched a short film on biodiversity management titled ‘For the Future’ which was produced by Nagaland State Biodiversity Board.

Forest range officer, Doyang division, Wokha, Lansothung Lotha dwelt on presentation on rich biodiversity of Nagaland. The programme was organised by Nagaland State Biodiversity Board.
